In Taiwan, the Criminal Investigation Bureau has announced the arrest of ten people it claims were involved in operating an illegal online gambling ring.
Police raided twelve locations across central Taiwan over the weekend and arrested nine people along with the alleged ringleader of the Internet gambling business. Raids took place in Taipei, Taichung and the counties of Taichung and Changhua after police received tips that the operation was running three unidentified online gambling websites and an underground gambling outlet. A police spokesperson said that the operation used sports match results and the ups and downs of indices for futures as the bases for winning or losing.
Law enforcement officers arrested the alleged ringleader of the operation, Lin Min-Chi along with nine others and seized records and equipment including computers, monitors and telephones.
According to the spokesperson, Lin confessed that his ring had been operating the gambling outlets since 2005. Estimates released by police show that the monthly turnover topped $3.08 million based on the ring''s bookkeeping records.
Lin and the other arrested are to be referred to the Taichung Public Prosecutors'' Office and charged with gambling and organised crime. |
